McDonald's McGueira
McDonald's McGueira
McDonald's McGueira is a dating sim video game developed by roseIeaf and released on May 1, 2020 for direct download on PC and Macintosh.[2][3] The game uses characters and art from the 2019 Japanese animated film Promare, and features them in an alternative universe where they are employees and customers at McDonald's.
Gameplay
The gameplay of McDonald's McGueira is minimal and can be compared to a visual novel. Players read through a series of dialogue and narrative text, and then can click different dialogue options to change how the story progresses. Certain dialogue options can also change the music that plays during certain scenes in the game. The game features nine different endings depending on the player's choices.
Plot
The Drive-Thru
Y/N has a lunch break during work and decides to go to the drive-thru at McDonald's.
The person taking the player's name identifies himself as Gueira.
When the player orders, Gueira introduces himself again, which Y/N comments is strange but decides to ignore as they want in line for their food.
When they get up to the front, Gueira is there again and yet again introduces himself.
Y/N comments that they remember, which surprises Gueira.
Gueira comments that he enjoys the player's music choice and informs the player of his hours.
The player takes their food and leaves.
The Next Day, Bad End 1, and Melon Ending
The next day, the player returns to McDonald's for a late lunch since they have the day off.
Gueira comes to take the player's order.
The player can choose one of three food options, tell Gueira he smells like ketchup, ask to speak to the manager, or simpy say "melon".
If the player chooses "melon" Gueira appears upset, and the game resets to the title screen.
This ends the game, although it is not considered an official ending.
Ordering a southwest grilled chicken sandwich will disgust Gueira and he will leave, causing Bad End 1.
Ordering one of the other food options progresses the game.
Another employee, Galo, brings out the player's order.
Y/N asks where Gueira went, and Galo states that he went on a break.
The player goes to find a seat and find that each table is taken, so they will have to sit at a table with another person.
They can choose between the left, center, or right table, where Remi, Meis, and Gueira are sitting respectively.
Depending on which table you sit at, the player can engage in a short conversation with the character they sit with.
Remi is opposed to the player sitting down but they sit down anyway, leading to a notable tension at the table.
Y/N tries to make conversation by asking Remi his name and inquiring into what he is looking at on his phone.
He comments that he is looking at a post he made on Reddit, a "site for refined individuals". The player can choose to say they don't use Reddit and end the conversation, or compliment the post, making Remi happy. He says that his favorite subreddit is r/malefashionadvice and pulls out a fedora he claims that he got because of the website. Y/N politely excuses themselves and quickly leaves.
When Y/N sits with Meis, they comment on Meis coming to the restaurant for a soda and fries without ordering anything else.
Meis gets upset and mention getting a snack for practice.
The player can choose to ask about this practice, which will cause Meis to leave, or say that they weren't judging Meis for his taste and continue the conversation.
Y/N asks for Meis' name, and when Meis asks why Y/N wants to know, they explain that Gueira has told them his name several times already.
Meis says that the same has happened to him and gives the player his name.
Meis then heads off to practice.
When the player sits with Gueira, they comment that it feels like they can't stop bumping into him.
Gueira asks how the player's visit has been, and they can insult the customer service to make Gueira sad and get him to take the player's complaints to the manager, or credit Gueira for making the trip great.
Gueira will return the compliment and then proceed to break the fourth wall, telling the player directly that the scene was the last that the creator made, and recommending that the player get Gueira to stand in the lettuce.
Y/N is confused by this, and then Gueira goes back to work.
Once Y/N is finished with their food or has fled from Remi, they go back up to the counter and talk to Gueira yet again.
From here, the game approaches its first branching path.
Outside the McDonald's, Bad End 5, Neutral and Good Ends
If the player asks what Gueira's name is, Gueira responds with surprise since the player is the first person to ask.
He explains that his nametag fell in the fryer, and so Gueira has been compensating by telling people his name.
The player leaves the restaurant, but is approached in the parking lot by Gueira on his motorcycle.
He explains that he got suspended for a week because he stood in the lettuce, and asks if the player wants to go to his house so that he can show them something.
If the player says that they will go if Gueira gives them something, Y/N says that they already got together with Meis and insults Gueira, causing him to leave.
This leads to Bad End 5.
Saying that there is someone else causes Lio to come out of the building.
Y/N and Lio exchange affection, and Lio asks why Gueira is lingering at the restaurant after their suspension.
Lio notices that Gueira wanted to try to go for Y/N, and Lio and Y/N laugh at him.
Gueira leaves in tears, and Y/N tells Lio that they love him.
Lio returns the sentiment, and the Neutral End is achieved.
If the player agrees to go with Gueira, the Good End is triggered.
They get on Gueira's bike and the two head towards Gueira's house.
On the way, Y/N exclaims that they are surprised at themselves for going along with this.
Gueira mishears the player and laments the loss of the band LMFAO.
The two arrive at Gueira's house, which is full of trash.
Gueira asks Y/N to close their eyes while he tries to find something.
When the player opens their yes, Gueira is holding a photograph of himself at work.
Y/N loves it and tell Gueira that they love him.
Gueira tells the player that he loves them too, and introduces himself again.
Y/N states that Gueira will never have to tell them his name again, and Gueira is happy.
The two sit on Gueira's bed and commit to a relationship.
The game then skips ahead ten years.
Y/N and Gueira are married, and Y/N is a housewife while Gueira continues to work at McDonald's.
Y/N gifts Gueira with a new frame for his picture for their ten year anniversary, and the two thank McDonald's for their relationship.
The Kitchen, Bad End 2, and the Secret End
At the counter, the player can flirtatiously ask Gueira to make a McDouble with them.
Gueira misinterprets the comment and believes that Y/N wants to learn how to cook burgers.
He takes the player into the kitchen and asks what their favorite sandwich is at the restaurant.
If the player responds that they are a vegetarian, Gueira gets upset and asks Y/N to leave.
Galo asks if Y/N is a new employee, and they reply that they are not anymore.
This is Bad End 2.
Choosing the Big Mac, McChicken, or McRib progresses the story.
Gueira moves to the other side of the kitchen.
Galo approaches the player and asks if they are a new employee.
Y/N says that they are, and Galo introduces himself properly introduces himself to the player.
Gueira introduces the player to the burger making station and asks the player where they would like to start.
The player can choose to tell Gueira to stand in the lettuce buckets, which initiates the Secret End.
Gueira is surprised by the request and questions the idea, stating that he has a foot fungus.
However, Y/N is firm, and Gueira agrees in tears to stand in the lettuce.
Once standing in the lettuce, he comments that the action is somewhat enjoyable, and that he left his shoes and socks on.
The two are interrupted by Galo, who reveals himself to be the Promepolis undercover food inspector and yells at Gueira to stop standing on the lettuce.
Gueira confronts Galo about his ability to objectively conduct his work, because of his part-time job at Hooters Galo puts on a Hooters tank top and confirms Gueira's claim. He expresses that his commitment to his work as an undercover food inspector was strong, but that he fell in love with Hooters during his work there. Thus, his motivation changed to ruining other fast food franchises. Gueira expresses his love for his job, and tells Galo that he will not ruin that for him. Galo challenges Gueira, and the three characters go outside to settle the issue. Meanwhile, Y/N expresses confusion as to why Galo and Gueira are taking this so seriously, and how they ended up outside. Gueira taunts Galo, and Galo asks for Gueria's name. He tells Gueira he will eat his words, and the battle begins.
The fight between Galo and Gueira is an animated cutscene in the parking lot separating McDonald's and Hooters.
Both characters are shown with title cards identifying them as Hooters Galo and McDonald's Gueira.
The two then proceed to fight each other, and Gueira knocks Galo out, winning the fight.
The cutscene ends, and Galo is seen lying on the ground.
Y/N worriedly asks if Galo is dead, and it is confirmed that he is merely unconscious with a bloody nose.
Gueira does not want to call for health officials to help in fear that they'll notice roaches in the McDonald's kitchen, so Gueira and Y/N agree to leave Galo be.
Gueira offers to get Y/N ice cream, and the two head back inside.
The Freezer, Bad Ends 3 & 4, and True Ending
At the burger making station, the player can ask to start with the meat.
Gueira, still taking the player's comments literally, calls the player a rebel for starting with the meat and not the bread.
They go to start cooking, and notice that Galo has failed to take the patties out of the freezer.
Gueira and Y/N go to get more from the freezer.
Gueira explains that he comes to the freezer to take breaks since he can juul without fear of being seen on the security cameras.
He notices that Y/N is cold and offers his jacket.
The player can ask to have some of his juul, and the two will reminisce on older flavors.
They are interrupted by Lio, who is attempting to find Gueira to tell him to get back to work.
He is upset at Gueira for using his juul in the freezer again, and for having strangers in the freezer.
Lio decides to fire Gueira, stating that Gueria has been given enough chances.
It is revealed that Lio has hired Meis to take over Gueira's position, as Meis comes in asking how to operate the fryer.
While Gueira begs Lio for his job, Meis flirts with Y/N, and Meis and Y/N agree to get together after Meis' shift.
This is Bad End 3.
The player can also reject the jacket and ask to leave the freezer.
The player will be given another chance to take the jacket, and if they reject it again, Bad End 4 is triggered.
Y/N will become hostile towards Gueira and ask why he brought them back here without asking how they felt about the situation.
They tell Gueira that people do not care what his name is and spit on him, leaving him in the freezer.
Finally, the player can take Gueira's jacket.
Lio will come into the freezer and ask about the player being in the freezer.
Y/N tries to explain, but Gueira interrupts and claims that Lio hired Y/N onto the McDonald's team.
Y/N goes along with the ruse, asking if Lio remembered interviewing them last week.
Lio does not, but blames this on stress from being repeatedly questioned by the health department and buys the claim.
Lio agrees to put Y/N on the schedule and reluctantly asks Gueira to train them.
He leaves, and Gueira comments that he believes that he and Y/N will be good friends.
He hands Y/N their uniform, achieving the True Ending.
Characters
Y/N
Y/N is the character who the player controls throughout the game.
The narration throughout the game is the thought process of Y/N over the course of the game, and the narration is in the second person to imply that Y/N is meant to be a self-insertion of the player. While Y/N is never named throughout the game's dialogue, their name can be seen on the name tag of their McDonald's uniform in the true ending.
Gueira
Gueira is the deuteragonist and the main character that the player interacts with over the course of the game. Gueira is passionate about his job at McDonald's, and has a habit of reminding characters of his name several times despite the characters not having forgotten his name. He has a playlist named "Gueira's chill beats to flip burgers/mop the floor to", and is stated to be a fan of the K-pop group Red Velvet. It is also stated that his favorite item on the menu is the Filet-O-Fish. Gueira takes a liking to Y/N because of their music taste, and the player unlocks the good and true endings of the game by befriending him.
Lio
Lio is the manager of the McDonald's where the game takes place.
He is British, and is known to not be a fan of Gueira's taste in music.
Gueira and Y/N trick Lio into hiring the player in the true ending, and the player romances him in the neutral ending.
Galo
Galo is an employee at McDonald's who is revealed in the secret ending to be the Promepolis undercover food inspector.
While he loves his job, he also finds a love for Hooter's during his investigative work at the restaurant, and thus decides to sabotage the other restaurants in the city.
In the secret ending, he fights Gueira and loses.
He also ends many of his sentences with smiley faces, which is noted as strange by Y/N.
Meis
Meis is one of the characters that the player can choose to sit with during their lunch.
He talks about getting soda and fries as a snack in between practice, but does not elaborate on what he practices for.
However, watching Gueira's video on his phone reveals that Meis is in Red Velvet.
The player can romance Meis in two of the bad endings, and in one of the bad endings Meis is hired to McDonald's.
Remi
Remi is one of the characters that the player can choose to sit with during their lunch.
Remi is a self-proclaimed Reddit user who is proud that his recent post has received 42 upvotes. He is initially hostile to the player, but warms up to the player if they choose to say that they also use Reddit. He wears a fedora. Y/N is noted to be scared of Remi.
Development
The idea of Gueira working at McDonald's is credited as originating from a fan fiction for Promare by roseieaf titled Unexpected Rifts that was published February 3, 2020.[4][5] In the story, Gueira mentions working at McDonald's in passing, but the tidbit sparked discussion and jokes online from Promare fans who found the concept humorous.[4] On April 9, 2020, one Twitter user with the username OtterParade suggested the idea for a dating sim game based on the concept, and roseieaf commented to "not give [her] any ideas".[6] The next day she posted a picture of what appeared to be an early version of the game, with Gueira at the counter of a McDonald's and two dialogue options.[7] From here development was regularly posted about on roseieaf's Twitter, with photos and videos as more scenes were developed.[8][9][10][11][12][13]
Soundtrack
The game does not have an original score, instead having a soundtrack of primarily previously released songs.
Most of the game is scored by Gueira's playlist that he plays over the McDonald's speakers.
The player can also ask to speak to the manager to have the music change to Lio's playlist.
