Controversy
Maylin's mother was upset with the NYPD's slow response in trying to find her daughter and to identify her body. She also was upset by the lack of media coverage about Maylin's disappearance and death.
Many criticized the media for failing to cover the disappearance and death of Maylin despite the heavy coverage of the deaths and disappearances of two white women Karina Vetrano and Vanessa Marcotte also from New York, New York. Both women died in August shortly after Maylin's death. [1]
Some said that the media covered the stories of Maylin versus Karina Vetrano and Vanessa Marcotte show the racial bias present in the media and the idea of the Missing White Girl Syndrome where more media coverage if the victim is attractive, young and white.
After the death of Karina Vetrano the NYPD offered $20K for information on her killer and the New York City Fire Department recently added $5K, urging people to come forward with any information. However no rewards were offered for information relating to the death or disappearance of Maylin.
