Career
Matthew Moriarty served as a Daytona Beach Shores Department of Public Safety from his hiring in November 2015 to his firing in April 2018.
Firing
On Tuesday, April 10, 2018 Matthew Moriarty was fired from his job as a Public Safety Officer for the Daytona Beach Shores Department of Public Safety for his racially insensitive Snapchat selfie.
The Snapchat post, which Moriarity’s lawyer described as a 15-second lapse of judgment, featured Moriarty with a black afro and beard, alongside emojis of a gun, syringe and a police car.
The bottom of the photo said “This is how I celebrate Black History Month.”
In February, 2018 Daytona Beach Shores Department of Public Safety director Stephan Dembinsky received a complaint from one of the roughly 15 people Moriarty sent the Snapchat to.
Dembinsky suspended Moriarty and ordered an internal investigation.
