On October 9, 2017, Pittsburg authorities stated that Darby was wanted for questioning in the homicide investigation of Alina Sheykhet. ^{[1] [0]}

On October 8, 2017, just before 9:00 a.m. local time, Sheykhet's parents found her body in her second-floor apartment in the 3500 block of Cable Place.

An autopsy showed that she had died from blunt force trauma of the head. ^{[1] [0]}

At the time of her death, Sheykhet had a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend, Matthew Darby. In the restraining order, Darby had climbed up the gutter on the side of her house and broke through the second floor window of the home. He did this because she left him and stopped answering his phone calls.

She had also listed grabbing and pushing as prior incidents of abuse and described Darby as emotionally abusive, jealous and controlling.

On September 26, 2017, Darby was arrested and charged with felony criminal trespass for allegedly breaking in to Alina Sheykhet’s apartment on Cable Place in Oakland, Pennsylvania. ^{[1] [0]}
