Martin Nweeia

Dr. Martin T. Nweeia is a National Fellow of the Explorers Club and was featured on the BBC World program Outlook, which focused on the importance of teeth in different cultures.

The dentist and explorer has led two dental research expeditions.

The first, to the Colombian Amazon in 1977, received an Explorers Club grant to study the migration patterns of living Indians through studies on their teeth.

The second, supported by a Cleveland Foundation grant and biomedical research grants from Case Western Reserve University, documented childhood dental diseases among Ulithi Atoll children in Micronesia.

Results from these studies have been presented and were published in journals of the International Association of Dental Research and the American Journal of Physical Anthropology.

Dr. Nweeia has also received grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, Harvard University, the Smithsonian Institution and the National Geographic Society.

He was a Joseph Silber Fellow of the American Cancer Society and Graduate Research Fellow in the Department of Anthropology at the Smithsonian Institution.

He is currently a Research Associate in the Marine Mammal Program at the Smithsonian.
