Marko Budisavljević

Marko Budisavljević

Marko Budisavljević (fl. 1746 - 1787), later known as Marko Budisavljević von Priedor or Marko Budisavljević Prijedorski was an officer in Habsburg military, known as one of the most prominent members of Budisavljević family in Lika region of today's Croatia.

He was the son of Manojlo "Mane" Budisavljević (b. 1684).

In 1746, he joined the Liccaner Grenzer Regiment (Lika Borderers) which had its headquarters in Gospić. He advanced to the rank of Oberleutnant (Captain) and excelled in the war with the Ottoman Turks; in 1787 he commanded 500 men, including two of his sons, during a campaign in Ottoman-ruled Bosnia and defeated Ottoman troops near Ključ and Prijedor. Habsburg emperor Joseph II gave him Peerage and title "von Priedor" ("Prijedorski") which would later be used by his descendants.

His son Petar was killed in 1805 near Verona during the War of the Third Coalition, while his other son Tomo became Orthodox priest. Tomo's granddaughter was Sofija Mandič, thus making Marko Budisavljević an ancestor of famous inventor Nikola Tesla.
