The brazen attack done by Left Wing extremists on March 11, 2017 left a lethal aftermath in Kottacheru Village of Sukma District which is 450 kilometers away from Raipur, State Capital of Chhattisgarh. [7] The attack of theNaxalite-Maoist insurgencyis said to be the biggest one in the past two years. [6] Twelve Central Reserve Police Force personnel were killed during the attack. 112 CRPF personnel were on patrol for a road construction party when they were ambushed and were confronted with heavy fire. [8] The Maoists had turned the entire area into a minefield and when the troops started moving to defensive positions, explosions were set off. [4]
The incident happened at around 9:15 i n the morning and lasted for an hour.
Eleven weapons like INSAS and AK series rifles and a couple of wireless sets were looted during the incident. The area under attack is the last bastion of the Naxalites in the Sukma District, falling under the stronghold of Maoist leader Hidma. [5] The Maoist Cadres eliminated in 2016 has been the highest number in the last six years. The Naxalite-Maoist Conflict started in 2004 after the formation of Communist Party of India, People’s War Group and Maoist Communist Centre of India. The 2013 Naxal attack gained international scrutiny over the death of 24 Indian National Congress leaders including the Chhattisgarh Congress Chief Nand Kumar Patel and CM Mahendra Karma. [9] Till now, this conflict has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people on annual basis since year 2005.
