Traffic Stop
On July 10, 2016, just a few days after the death of Philando Castile, Lt. Greg Abbott made racist commentary during a traffic stop to a nervous passenger during a DUI stop. [1]
The audio of the video makes clear that Lt. Abbott is going to arrest the woman and tow the car and that she must use her phone to call the people that supposedly are going to pick her up and tell them not to come.
The women then says that she doesn't want to put her hands down because she has seen videos of police officers shooting innocent people.
Lt. Abbott replies: [4]
“But you’re not black.
Remember, we only shoot black people.
Yeah.
We only kill black people, right?
All the videos you’ve seen, have you seen the black people get killed?
Footage of the video was obtained by Channel 2 action news. The video then got into the hands of Cobb County Police and was immediately placed under administrative leave as his comments must be observed in its full context. [3]
On Thursday August 31st, 2017, Cobb County Police Department fired Lt. Abbott.
