On February 10, 2018, Joseph Nickell killed his parents, James Nickell and Arlene Nickell, his girlfriend Vanhoose, and her mother in a shooting spree before committing suicide.

Nickell's parents, James and Arlene Nickell, were gunned down at a residence in the McKenzie Branch area of Flatgap, Kentucky, and Lindsey along with her mother, Patricia, later were fatally shot at an apartment in Paintsville.
