Leslie Gibson

Leslie Gibson

Leslie E. Gibson is a former GOP candidate running for the 57th district of the Maine House of Representatives. [1]

Press

Leslie Gibson was featured in the press after tweeting to attack two survivors of the Parkland High School Shooting. [1]

He called David Hogg a 'bald-faced liar' and Emma Gonzalez a 'skin-head lesbian'. [1]

After receiving backlash for the comments, he took to twitter to 'sincerely apologize,' for the homophobic remark and said it was 'inappropriate to single out these students regardless of whether I agree with their message or not.'[1]

Leslie's original tweet against Emma Gonzalez was in response to an article posted by The Hill. [1]

Response

State senator Amy Volk called for Leslie Gibson to step out of the race. Gibson deactivated his Twitter as a result of the backlash he received.

2018 Election

In 2018, Gibson ran for the 57th district of the Maine House of Representatives. Until his comments about the Parkland students gained national attention, he was the only declared candidate for the seat; Republican incumbent Stephen Wood was prevented from seeking reelection, as had already served the maximum number of terms allowed by Maine's law.

Democrats David Gilbert and Eryn Gilchrist, as well as Republican Thomas Martin (Maine politician), a former state senator who now lives in Greene, all entered the race.

On March 18, 2018, it was announced that Gibson dropped out of the race, after facing public criticism regarding his tweets towards Emma Gonzalez and David Hogg.
