On Sunday, February 4, 2018, after 2:00 a.m. local time, Brayer was riding on the back of a transportation cart with several other people southbound on Civic Center Plaza in Scottsdale, Arizona when a male driving in a red Scion coupe began driving closely and bumping the rear end of the cart. ^{[2] [0] [1]}

Brayer got out of the cart and approached the driver's window and was shot in the head. The suspect fled the scene eastbound on Stetson toward Boondocks Patio & Grill, and then south on 75th Street, hitting other cars along the way. ^{[2] [1] [0]}

Medics rushed Brayer to the hospital where he he died.
