Kyandrea Thomas
Kyandrea Thomas is a woman from rural Louisiana near Baton Rouge who does work for the Salvation army and once worked for a Walmart Supercenter of New Roads in Pointe Coupee Parish.
Negligent Homicide
In 2011, Thomas pleaded guilty to negligent homicide.
The case goes back to a 2009 incident where she was accused of leaving a 3-year old girl inside a daycare center van until she died.
The Advocate reports the child was left in the car for six hours in the heat while she worked for Wanda's Kids World - which has been out of business since.
Thomas was one of two employees blamed for the death of the 3-year old.
She was sentenced to five years probation and 10,000 hours of community service for her part in the death.
Birth & Second-Degree Murder
On December 23rd, 2016, Kyandrea was collecting donations as a bell ringer for Salvation army throughout the morning and early afternoon outside of the Walmart Supercenter she once worked at. As the afternoon tugged into its midday sun at around 3 p.m., Kyandrea began to feel pain and transitioned into labour.
When Kyandrea went into labour, she headed inside the Walmart and headed toward a bathroom. An employee say that she was bleeding and gave her some paper towels - claiming she was having trouble with her menstrual cycle. Once she was inside the bathroom, the employee waited outside without any knowledge that she was giving birth to a new born baby. She then wrapped the baby and placed the baby inside a plastic bag. She left the baby inside a trash can and left the bathroom.
About four hours later, another employee emptying the trash noticed it was relatively heavy.
The worker placed the trash bag on the floor and found the 6 hour-old infant, discolored and unresponsive.
The ambulance was called to the scene and revived the baby whom the workers at Walmart good-heartedly named "Olivia".
She was later taken to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton rouge.
Police officers were able to identify Kyandrea through the help of the surveillance footage which finds her speaking with some of the other witnesses just outside the bathroom.
They found Thomas, who was taken to another hospital in a nearby town Friday night because of complications from giving birth.
Thomas was taken into custody after she was discharged from the hospital on Saturday afternoon.
After being treated at the hospital, she as transported to Point Coupee Parish jail where she will be booked for attempted second-degree murder.
Thomas gave a full confession to police about giving birth in the Wal-Mart bathroom.
Kyandrea Thomas could have called 911 or taken the baby to a local area hospital and dropped it off without any legal ramifications under the Louisiana Safe haven laws. Under the safe haven law, the website states that “you can leave your unharmed baby, up to 30 days old, with an employee at any medical facility, fire department, hospital, police department, emergency medical services provider, pregnancy crisis center, medical clinic, public health unit or child advocacy center in Louisiana.”
Olivia is in stable critical condition and treated in Baton Rouge at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital.
the identity of the father is still unknown and police are still investigating the case in order to understand Thomas' motivation.
