Krystal Lake is a 22 year old worker at The Home Depot in Staten Island, New York located on Forest Avenue in Mariners Harbor. She is also a student at the College of Staten Island and a Bernie Sanders supporter. ^[1]

Controversy

While on her morning shift at The Home Depot Krystal Lake wore a hat that read, "AMERICA WAS NEVER GREAT," which was an ironic play on presidential candidate Donald Trump's campaign slogan "Make America Great Again." ^[1]

Krystal said she wears the hat because "The point of the hat was to say America needs changing and improvement."

She added that "I know there are a lot of opportunities here," "I just wish we would worry about making America better -- not 'great again.'"^[1]

Since it went viral she has received dozens of death threats on her social media accounts and racist insults from many Trump supporters who were offended by her play on his slogan. ^[1]

Krystal said that none of the managers asked to remove her hat and that many The Home Depot employees at the store wear buttons and hats with Donald Trump's slogan. ^[1]

The Home Depot's Response

The Home Depot spokesman Stephan Holmes said Lake's message on her hat does not reflect the opinions of The Home Depot. He also said that if management saw her wear the hat they would ask her to remove it since it goes against company rules to wear items with political statements. ^[1]
