Plot
In the cold opening vicious street battles rage in Belgrade between Partisans and bands of straggling Germans. Mrki, still wearing civillian clothes, joins his brother Tihi and Prle, now in uniforms. Mrki tells Prle that he was just reinstated to the old rank of Lieutenant. While this goes on, Krieger in civillian clothes combs his hair differently, puts glasses and false moustache in order to change appearance.
Partisans ambush German Kubelwagen carrying two officers. One of them is killed instantly, while another runs and tries to hide into apartment building in which Krieger is housed. It is revealed to be SS Captain König and he bangs on the door of Krieger's apartment desperately calling for help. Krieger not only doesn't help him, but points three Partisans into his direction. König is ultimately killed, but the whole episode has been witnessed by Mrs. Salnikova, Russian woman living next door to Krieger. She tries to warn Partisan patrol, but one of them is wounded and they tell that they don't have time to deal with her problem.
Joca is having drinks with Steva, his old friend, neighbour and Prle's father.
Steva, who had been fighting in Partisans from the beginning, wants to ask how Prle handled himself while he was away.
Joca tells that he didn't handle himself well and that he was stripped of rank because of womanising.
Prle visits his mother who tells him that Steva was promoted to warrant officer.
Prle comes to Joca's apartment where his angered father assaults him for shaming family name.
Unpleasant situation is ended with Partisan courier appearing and addressing Prle as Lieutenant, after which Prle jokingly threatens his father that he could have him court-martialled for assaulting superior officer.
Prle returns to headquarters where Mrs. Salnikova tells the story about her neighbour and German officer who called for Krieger.
Prle, Mrki, Tihi and Partisan Aca are sent by Major Milan to Krieger's apartment.
After not being answered at the door, Prle picks a lock and they enter.
They search the apartment and Mrki discovers Krieger's uniform.
Tihi orders Aca to guard the apartment while he, Prle and Miki continue search in neighbourhood.
Despite Major Milan's suggestion not to return to her apartment, Mrs. Salnikova does so and she is met by Krieger who had broken into.
She strangles her and then returns to his apartment where he kills Aca with a silencer gun.
After that he takes a suitcase that was missed by Tihi's team, which is revealed to be radio station.
He begins to communicate with German headquarters.
Prle, Mrki and Tihi drive with Willys MB through the bombed out streets when they encounter fight between Partisans and group of German stragglers. One of Partisans explain that Germans, armed with MG 42, put a heavy resistance and that among them is someone in civillian clothes believed to be high Gestapo officials. When Prle and Tihi take them out, the civillian straggler is revealed to be Isa, agent of former collaborationist Special Police.
Krieger in the meantime visits Primadonna Petronijevič, opera singer who used to be his good friend during the occupation.
She pretends she doesn't know him and shows her new sponsor, Red Army Colonel Belonogov. Krieger leaves, knowing that he can't expect help from her. He then visits one of his former intelligence assets Velja Ristić. The man not only refuses to help him with his mission, but threatens to warn Partisans about him. Krieger kills him with silenced gun.
Prle and Tihi, worried about Aca not reporting back as ordered, rush to Krieger's apartment and find both Mrs. Salnikova and Aca dead.
Prle becomes worried about Marija.
As it happens, she arrives to her apartment where she find Krieger who had been hiding.
Krieger tells her that he came to seek help from her, but his professionalism led him to search the apartment beforehand.
He found radio station and other evidence pointing to Marija working for the resistance.
Despite being humiliated by a woman to whom he had ben attracted, Krieger decides not to take immediate revenge and instead demands that she assist him on his trip to Makiš, where he would to make contact with group SS commando team. Tihi telephones Marija and asks her to immediately meet him at the headquarters; she answers that she can't because she is meeting with someone named Ratko. Mrki determines that it was coded message, because "Rat" in Serbian means "war", just like "Krieg" means "war" in German. They conclude that Krieger is at her apartment and they rush there.
Krieger instead uses Marija as a shield and move through the street where massed of people celebrate liberation.
He shoots one Partisan officer in order to steal his Wyllis MB, but Marija uses commotion to escape.
She later tells Prle and Tihi that Krieger will meet with SS soldiers at Makiš.
