Kevin Hines
Kevin Hines
Kevin Hines attempted suicide on September 25, 2000 by jumping off of the Golden Gate Bridge. Hines was diagnosed with bipolar disorder during his teenage years and was 19 at the time he attempted suicide.
Immediately after jumping over the railing Hines claims to have regretted the decision and despite having broken 3 vertebrae he treaded water until being rescued.
A sea lion swam up to Hines while he was in the water and helped him keep his head above water.
Hines is only one of 33 out of the over 1,600 known suicide attempts from the Golden Gate Bridge that survived the fall.
Hines now travels talking about mental illness and how to prevent suicide.
He spoke at the University of Pennsylvania in April 2016, after the recent suicide of a student on campus. [1]
