Petty was sentenced to 18 to 54 months in state prison; he served only four years and was registered as a level 2 sex offender in New York. [1]
In 2002, he allegedly shot and killed Lamont Robinson with a loaded handgun. [4] Kenneth spent seven years behind bars after he was found guilty of manslaughter in 2006. According to the criminal complaint from the Queens County District Attorney, he pleaded guilty to the first-degree manslaughter following the shooting of Lamont Robinson. The complaint states that on April 27, 2002, at 12.30am, Petty shot Robinson "with a loaded handgun (sic) multiple times thereby causing his death". [16]
Officials originally charged Petty with murder in the second degree, but he struck a manslaughter deal with prosecutors and was sentenced to 10 years in prison, for which he served seven.
Court records indicate Petty was released in May 2013 and had been on supervised release for five years up until May 2018.[16]
In total, Petty has been arrested 12 times.

In December 2018, Nicki Minaj publicly called Petty her lover in an Instagram post. It was around that time that Petty got a giant neck tattoo dedicated to Nicki.[2] She also stated that the couple has sexual intercourse up to four times a night. Nicki Minaj announced on October 22nd that she had married Kenneth Petty. She first teased their possible marriage in August, saying: [10][12]
"We'll definitely do the paperwork portion of the marriage, but the actual wedding, I don't know.
You know when you’re a little girl and you want this big beautiful wedding, and I used to think I was one of those girls, I always wanted the fairytale.
But then the things that used to matter to you don’t matter as much."
The two had been in a relationship years ago, when Minaj was 16 and Petty was 20.
They apparently rekindled their relationship when Nicki was handing out turkeys for Thanksgiving in her hometown. [9]
Petty was in a relationship with a woman named Noelle before ditching her for Nicki.
Noelle shared on a Nicki Minaj fan page: [11]
"(I) Have no problem with her.
But she messing with my man who was living with me!!
How he just wake up and chase behind a rapper.
I mean I know she famous and all and girls chase rappers all the time.
But as a man.
My man I wouldn't expect that at all."
Petty has 5 children from previous relationships and none of them are Nicki's.[10]
In June 2019, Minaj revealed on her new Queen Radio show on Apple Beats 1 that she and Petty had gotten a marriage license.
“We did get our marriage license.
I think I have what I was striving for, just happiness.
It was so hard to get to a happy place.
Now that I’m there, I don’t want to compromise that for anyone or anything.”
Also that month, Petty starred with Minaj in her newest music video, for the song “Megatron.” [13]
The video featured Minaj and Petty in a hot tub as she sang, “I f— him like I miss him / He just came out of prison” — a line that fans interpreted as reference to Petty’s criminal record. [13] After their marriage, details emerged about the $1,100,000 diamond engagement ring that Petty bought Nicki. Petty bought it with his own money and presented the ring in a jewelry box that plays a photo slideshow of their memories to the tune of Nicki's "Come See About Me." [15]
While responding to commenters on Instagram discussing Petty's crimes, Minaj said, “He was 15, she was 16 … in a relationship. But go awf Internet. Y’all can’t run my life. Y’all can’t even run y’all own life. Thank you boo.” According to TMZ, Minaj has known Petty since they themselves were teenagers, and she is “confident he’s matured” since then. [13]
Minaj officially announced that she had married Petty with a video on Instagram, showing matching “Mr. and Mrs.” mugs and black and white baseball caps that had “Bride” and “Groom” written across the front. Minaj captioned the short clip, “👰🏽🤵🏽😢🙏🏽🎀 Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty 10•21•19” — referencing her new official name and seemingly the day that she and Petty officially tied the knot. [13]
In July 2020, Petty had a request to alter the terms of his pretrial release conditions granted by a judge.
The tweak will allow Petty to travel with Minaj, 'periodically on business trips as her manager,' which will ensure he is present when she goes into labor, according to TMZ. Other pretrial conditions will stay in place, meaning Petty cannot use illicit substances and he will continue to wear an ankle monitor. Earlier, he submitted a request to alter his pretrial release conditions, which only allowed him to travel within California, according to documents obtained by TMZ.[17][18]
Minaj gave birth in September in Los Angeles. Petty and Minaj revealed their child is a boy.[19][22]
