She was a member of the Winston-Salem State University Marching Band, known as Red Sea of Sound. Reid also worked as a certified nursing assistant at a nursing home.
Friends remember her as having a passion for music and her dedication as a student.
Death
On April 28, 2017, Kendra's body was found hanging in a wooded area of Finch Park shortly after 9 a.m. local time.
Her death was ruled as a suicide.
Aftermath
Many social media users have questioned the circumstances surrounding Reid’s death, as well as the investigation into it. The hashtags #KendraShaniceReid and #JusticeForKendraReid are among those used to reference her death.
In July 2020, a user named Alina Foley created a Change.org petition titled "Justice for Kendra Shanice Reid" addressing Lexington Police Department, The Department of Justice's Office of Civil Rights and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. The petition demands that local authorities reopen Kayla's case and carry out a thorough, conclusive, and unbiased investigation. As of July 12, 2020, the petition was signed by 2,274 people.[9]
