Early Life & Education
Katy Watson grew up in Hong Kong. She graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2004, where she studied Spanish and Italian. [6] She went on to attend University of London from 2006 to 2007, where she studied broadcast journalism. [6]
Career
Katy Watson started her career as a General Assignments Reporter at Bloomberg News, and then moved to the commodities team where she focused on developments in the copper industry including industrial strikes in Chile.[6]
From 2006-2008, Watson worked as a Sub-editor at The Sun Online. From 2007-2009, she was a Freelance Producer of Prison Radio Association.[6]
She joined the BBC in 2007 as a Broadcast Journalist and Producer. From 2010-2013, she served as a Middle East Business Reporter. She travelled across the Middle East and North Africa, covering the economic consequences of the protests in the region. Based in the United Arab Emirates she also covered general news in the region. From June-December 2013, she was a Washington Reporter and covered breaking news and analysis on all aspects of US foreign and domestic policy. Stories included the government shutdown, changing relations witn Iran, reaction to the Syrian crisis and Egypt.[6]
From April 2014-January 2015, Watson was the BBC's South America Business Reporter, covering economics and finance across the region. Later, she became the BBC Mexico and Central America Correspondent, covering general news in the region.[6]
Since May 2017, Watson is a South America correspondent at BBC News.[6]
Personal Life
Watson gave birth to her daughter Isadora in May 2019 and then chose to return to work in October 2019.
She started stashing away milk within a month of giving birth which meant she started back from maternity leave with 16 days' supply in case she had to travel.
In two days she flew to Bolivia to cover the elections. While being away from her child, she used the pumping kit not to lose her milk. While traveling, she used minibars as well as hotel kitchens to store and freeze milk.[9]
