Kanisha Shelton is a native of Indianapolis, Indiana and was the mother of a two year old child, Kiyan Shelton. Kiyan died April 20 after accidentally shooting himself in the chest with a gun he found in his mother's purse.

Kanisha "had momentarily stepped away," according to police.
Kiyan took the pistol from his mom's purse and shot himself at 9 p.m. in a northwest-side home in the 5200 block of Alameda Road, near 52nd Street and West Kessler Boulevard.
Officers found the boy with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.
The boy was taken in critical condition to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, where he later died.
Kiyan and his mother were the only ones home during the shooting.
Kanisha had a valid gun permit for the.380 Bersa semi-automatic pistol used in Kiyan's death.
Captain Richard Riddle of the Indianapolis Police the case remains under investigation by detectives and that Kiyan's death has been labelled as a death investigation.
"Upon completion of their investigation, they will present their findings for a charging decision.
The mother fully cooperated with the investigation and was released last night," Riddle said.
"At this point, this appears to be a tragic accident, but the (Marion County prosecutor's office) will have final decision making on whether there were any criminal culpability in this incident."
