Julia Gargano is a Singer-songwriter. She is twenty one years old. She is an American and native of Staten Island in New York, where she was born and raised. Julia Gargano is one of the contestants on American Idol (season 18). Julia started writing and recording songs when she was six. By the time she reached her teenage years she was already singing Jazz as a professional in venues all over New York City. [5]
Julia Gargano's Parents
Julia Gargano was born to parents Frank and Jeanne McManus. Frank, her father is a singer and he can also play the guitar, though not on a professional level. Julia’s mum allowed her at age six to start taking drum lessons. Julia says her biggest fans are her parents.
Julia also has a kid sister called Lizzie, as well as a brother called Frankie.
They are also her big fans.
Education
Julia was a music student at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Performing Arts. There, she learnt and practiced music every day. After she graduated, she moved on to College of Saint Rose, in Albany, New York. She is currently a senior student in her last semester.
Julia praises the Artist Development classes she undertook for aiding the development of her voice and appearance.
She said:
“It forced me to get my stuff together and really know how to present myself.
It is something I don’t think I would have done if I wasn’t pushed out of my comfort zone to be an artist rather than be a songwriter.
You can do both, be an artist and a songwriter, and you will probably do better if you are both in the industry”.
Music
Julia has been a steady performer since she was thirteen, at the Bitter End in New York City. She is a big fan of Brandi Carlile. According to her:
“My favorite artist is Brandi Carlile.
She takes something ordinary and makes it sound magical and relatable.
That is what I try to do in my music.
I want people to feel a little spark”.
For the artist that inspires her the most, Julia chose Taylor Swift, referring to her as a genius. She revealed:
“Her first three or four albums are incredible.
I still go back and listen to it if I am having a bad day.
If I am consumed in craziness or depression, I think back to an album like Fearless or Speak Now and think this is why I am doing what I do.
I can picture myself singing these songs.
I credit so much of writing and my passion to T-Swift.”

American Idol
Julia sang her own song “Growing Pains” when she auditioned on the American Idol show.
Her outstanding performance earned her three yeses from the judges because they were very impressd.
Julia stated that she never thought about being part of American Idol as she felt she wasn’t good enough.
However this perception changed after she watched the likes of Alejandro Aranda who performed original songs and succeeded on the show. In her own words, she said:
“I saw Alejandro Aranda last season and he is a brilliant songwriter and musician and that really made me say to myself, ‘Eh Julia, just go for it ”.
