JT (City Girls)

Jatavia Shakara Johnson (born December 2, 1992), professionally known as JT, is a rapper from Opa-locka, Florida in Miami-Dade County, Florida. She is one half of the rap duo, City Girls, along with Yung Miami. [1]

Early Life

JT grew up in Opa-locka, Florida with her close friend and rapping partner, Yung Miami. They attended Carol City Middle School in Miami Gardens, Florida and were known for partying it up at clubs, block parties and strip clubs in the area. [2]

Music

City Girls recorded their debut studio track "Fuck Dat Nigga" in August 2017, and promoted it through social media and clubs. Later that year, the track was included in Quality Control Music's compilation album Control the Streets Volume 1.

In May 2018, they released their debut studio album, Period. In November 2018, they released their second album titledGirl Code, which features music artists Cardi B, Lil Baby and Jacquees. City Girls contributed with guest vocals to Drake's song "In My Feelings", with Yung Miami appearing in the music video. In August 2018, they released Point Blank Period, a documentary.

In November 2018, their album Girl Code entered the Billboard 200 at number 63. Their single "Twerk" featuring Cardi B has reached number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100.

On January 16, 2019, City Girls and Cardi B released the music video for "Twerk".

Since JT was incarcerated at the time, Yung Miami and Cardi B were featured in the video. The music video received over 36 million views in less than two weeks. For the music video, the City Girls issued a challenge asking women to post videos of themselves twerking. The top 20 were flown out to Miami for the music video shoot, and the winning dancer, DHQUEEN won $25,000.

To celebrate her release from prison, JT dropped a track called "JT First Day Out."

Personal Life

In 2018, JT was arrested on fraudulent credit card charges and held at FCI Tallahassee after turning herself into authorities. She was released to a halfway house on October 8th 2019, but is scheduled to be released fully on March 21st, 2020.
