Johnny Utah
Johnny Utah
Johnny Utah is an experimental genre-bending indie pop artist from Philadelphia, PA who mixes differing genres together such as funk, bedroom pop, indie pop, and lofi. The Indie funk performer broke through in 2019 with a single called "Honeypie." His low-fi, DIY music earned him a spot on Spotify's "Bedroom Pop" playlist and Apple Music's popular playlist for rising artists.
Early Life
Johnny Utah born as Jacob Sullenger is from Philadelphia. Johnny Utah once worked as a manager of Pizza joint after dropping out from college in New Jersey.
Career
In 2018, he released a single titled "Crazy For Your Love". “Crazy For Your Love” is a white flag. A complete surrender to the power someone has over you, and absolute resignation to something so beyond your control. It’s about the person who shimmers and sparkles with a light you’ve never known before, that makes everything feel kind of dull when they’re not around. The one you absolutely adore, who’s voice you want to hear every second of the day, who you’ll never stop trying for. It transcends pride or reason, and makes you forget about looking stupid cause what you have to say is so much more important. Johnny Utah reminds us that feelings are cool, that love isn’t lame, and when you find it you gotta tell them.
Johnny Utah after releasing a lot of singles, dropped a hot video titled "Honey Pie" in 2019. The video was directed by Jack O’Brian and is the epitome of making the most out of a low-budget video. Right off the bat, the viewer is introduced to the persona of the 23-year-old artist with his clean-cut, vintage outfit and long, blonde hair flowing from under a retro Club Camel hat. A smooth guitar kicks off the exuberant instrumental and simultaneously so does the storyline of the video. Johnny Utah incorporates the perfect mix of enthusiasm, style, and humor as he takes the viewer on a journey through a neighborhood chasing after his “Honeypie.” An intuitive take on the double-meaning of “Honeypie” indeed as in the lyrics the honeypie is a woman he is pursuing but in the video, it is a literal honeypie he is in pursuit of. The video truly radiates joyousness as Johnny is consistently full of energy whilst taking the viewer on quite the fun-run.[4][5]
Johnny Utah caught onto a wave of popularity after his releasing his singles like "Really Meant", "Crazy For Your Love", and "Honeypie" all received independent success on streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music in 2018-19. Johnny Utah also releases grouped selections of his singles in the form of EPs which have been released on cassette via the Slovakian Bandcamp label Z Tapes[3]. The rising artist is set to kick off 2020 with new projects which he is excited to share with the world[1]:
"I'm really excited to finally show people what I've been working on.
I feel like I get of put in the box sometimes, where they think I'm just an Indie-pop kid, but I got some things up my sleeve"
