Child Abuse and Murder
On August 9, 2016 Johnny Hartley and his girlfriend Mercy Mary Becerra were caught with a dead 2-year-old girl stuffed into a duffel bag while attempting to cross the border between San Diego, California to Tijuana, Mexico.
Both Johnny and Mercy are not the parents of the child.
The couple tried to cross at 11:30 p.m at the pedestrian border crossing for the San Ysidro port of entry.

Johnny Hartley and his girlfriend are both accused of murdering the 2-year-old girl.
The couple are facing charges of first-degree murder and facing counts of first-degree murder and child cruelty.

Mexican officials found the dead 2-year-old girl after x-ray scanning Johnny Hartley's duffel bag after he was pulled aside for additional screening.
Johnny was first detained by U.S.
Customs and Border Protection officers then transferred to homicide detectives with the San Diego Police Department.

Mercy attempted to flee but was caught quickly and taken into to custody by San Diego Police.

Criminal History
In 1999, Johnny plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter and possessing, manufacturing or selling a deadly weapon.
A gang enhancement was applied to the case, implying that Hartley was a gang member or a gang associate.
He was sentenced to 2 years and 8 months in prison.

In 2005, Johnny was convicted of possessing drugs with the intent to sell them and possessing drug paraphernalia.
He was sentenced to 2 years and 8 months in prison for the second time.

In 2010, Hartley pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm with a gang enhancement.
A number of other charges were dismissed in this case, including attempted murder and assault with a firearm.
