Orpin was last seen alive when she left the family home in Ryde at about 07:00 local tim on Tuesday February 13, 2018.

She was pictured on CCTV 20 minutes later buying cigarettes from a convenience store.

Her black Audi and a pair of her trainers were later found at the Culver Down viewpoint car park. ^{[2] [0]}

On Saturday February 17, 2018, Portsmouth Coastguard Rescue Team, Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team, Police and a Technical Rescue Unit from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called to Bosham Quay following the discovery of a woman’s body at the tide’s edge. ^{[2] [0]}

Although formal identification is yet to take place, authorities believe the body to be that of Joanna Orpin.
