Heaphy began his volunteer work with Wikipedia on June 28, 2009, and to date has amassed over 50,000 edits to the encyclopedia. His first article was about the Dutch copper artist Dirk van Erp. In February 2012, he was a founding host of the Wikipedia Teahouse – a safe place for newbies to ask questions. In 2017, he was nominated and voted in to be an English Wikipedia administrator.

Wikipedia is "a gift to humanity," he said. "It's a resource that volunteers have created for learning (and) free knowledge. It's for every person on the face of the earth. And I'm very, very proud to be part of it.
