Professional Boxing Career
Jones knocked down Carl Williams twice
Jones defeated future World Boxing Organization (WBO) heavyweight world champion Michael Bentt on February 7, 1989 at the Golden Nugget Atlantic City. It was formerly called the Trump Castle. Bentt beat Tommy Morrison for the WBO world heavyweight title in October 1993. Jones also holds wins over former number one heavyweight contender Carl Williams and Nate Jones. Jones went the eight round distance with Ray Mercer in 1989. Mercer won the gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics.
Jones defeated undefeated boxer Phil Gilberti in 1988.
He finished with a professional record of nine wins and eleven losses.
He lost six boxing matches by decision and never took a ten count in losing.
Jones worked as a sparring partner for years for heavyweight boxer and motion picture actor Tommy Morrison. He also worked as a sparring partner for Evander Holyfield and Riddick Bowe. Jones competed for the last time on September 22,1994 against Adílson Rodrigues in Brazil.
Title Challenge
Jerry Jones competed for the World Boxing Council Continental Americas and the North American Boxing Federation heavyweight championship against Alex Garcia on December 8, 1992 at the Hyatt Regency in Tampa, Florida. Garcia had a professional record of 28 wins and one loss at the time. Jones lost to a decision. The bout was aired on the USA Network.
