Jerry Devine is a high school basketball coach and teacher who currently coaches and teaches at Neshaminy High School in Langhorn, Pennsylvania.
He rose to internet infamy when during the late minutes of a basketball game against Pennsbury High School, he physically confronted a referee concerning a foul.
The incident happened with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game, when one of Devine’s players was called for a charging foul on a layup that would have cut Pennsbury High School's lead to three points.
The referee called a technical foul on Devine.
Devine then confronted the referee and after verbal exchange physically headbutted the referee sending the unsuspecting referee to the floor.
Middleton Police were called to the incident after the altercation due to the physical and intense nature of the confrontation between Devine and the referee.
Devine eventually knocked the referee to the ground and footage of the entire incident went viral over internet social media.
Devine was put on administrative leave immediately following the incident on January 5th, 2016.
The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association has said that Devine will receive anywhere between a one game or lifetime ban from coaching in the Pennsylvania high school leagues.
History:
Jerry Devine has been a coach at Neshaminy High School for ten years, since the 2005 season.
Devine had previously coached Villanova University senior star Ryan Arcidiacono, who graduated in 2011 from Neshaminy High School. He also has been teaching for 18 years total with previous jobs at Bucks County School and Bristol Boro School District. He has been at Neshaminy High School for 15 years as an algebra and history teacher. [1]
He has been married since 2009 and has four daughters.
