McLaughlin graduated from The Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor's degree in Writing Seminars.
Career
Prior to joining CNN in 2018, she covered intelligence and national security at Foreign Policy Magazine, where she broke in-depth investigative stories on the probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. She has written investigative pieces on regions including North Korea and the United Arab Emirates, insider accounts within the Central Intelligence Agency, dysfunction at the watchdog agencies overseeing the intelligence community, technology, biological threats, and the President's Intelligence Advisory board, among other topics. Before joining Foreign Policy, McLaughlin covered surveillance, digital espionage, national security law, and the NSA at The Intercept. She also served as a Ben Bagdikian Fellow at Mother Jones Magazine. [1]
