She grew up in Huntington, New York.

Jean Trebek met her husband for the first time in a party in 1988. The couple married in 1990. They have two children, Matthew and Emily.[5]
In March of 2019, Alex revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer.
Jean was asked about the hardest part of struggling right along with her husband as he continues to undergo treatment for pancreatic cancer during an interview with ABC’s Michael Strahan for an upcoming special, What Is Jeopardy? Alex Trebek and America’s Most Popular Quiz Show. "It’s when I see him in pain and I can’t help him," she said. "And when he doesn’t eat right. When he has too much diet soda."[2]

On November 8, 2020, Jean's husband, Alex Trebek died at age 80. The day after Trebek's passing, Jeopardy! executive producer Mike Richards told the Today's Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb that he'd gotten to spend his last day with his wife. "He had a swing in his backyard he loved, he actually rebuilt it earlier this year," Richards said, adding that Trebek was notoriously handy.[10]
