Jamel Floyd, a 35-year-old inmate at the Metropolitan Detention Center, Brooklyn died in his cell of heart attack, after being pepper-sprayed by correctional police officers. [1]
The incident happened around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3rd 2020.
Another jail source stated Floyd tried to destroy the toilet and sink in the cell, along with shattering the cell-door window with a metal object.
The report stated the following:
"Responding staff observed inmate Jamel Floyd barricaded inside his cell and breaking the cell door windows with a metal object.
He became increasingly disruptive and potentially harmful to himself and others.
Pepper spray was deployed and staff removed him from his cell...Institution medical staff immediately responded to assess the inmate, found Mr. Floyd to be unresponsive, and instantly initiated life-saving measures...
The matter is under investigation.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Marshals Service were notified. No staff or others were injured. "
Floyd was initially held at Metropolitan Detention Center, Brooklyn since October of 2019 on unclear charges. [1] Floyd was later taken to the NYU Langone Medical Center in Brooklyn and declared dead by Fire Medics. Some even arranged a march to MDC for both George & Jamel Floyd to take place on 44th Street & 6th Avenue, Sunset Park, Brooklyn on Friday, June 6.

Floyd's death quickly rose on Top 5 trending on Twitter with #JamelFloyd, days after the killing and nationwide protests of George Floyd in Minneapolis by police officer Derek Chauvin (Police Officer). With users still reeling from the death of George Floyd, they referred to Jamel's death as "murder" and "torture".
With most tweets demanding for justice and calling it police brutality, the trend continued early morning June 4th with trending hashtag #HisNameIsJustinHowell, yet another African-American, 20, college student from Texas State University studying Political science who suffered severe injury after being hit with a so called "non-lethal" weapon, in Austin, Texas.
