Imani Gandy is an award-winning journalist, political blogger, and former attorney residing in Oakland, California. She is a Senior Legal Analyst at Rewire.News. [1]

Education

Imani Gandy graduated from Oberlin College in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Music. In 2001, Gandy graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law with a Juris Doctor, where she was a Hardy Cross Dillard scholar and an Editorial Board member of the University of Virginia School of Law. Since April 2013, Imani Gandy has worked as a Senior Legal Analyst for Rewire.News. She d evelop federal and state policy resources relating to anti-choice legislation. She also writes on topics related to legal issues in the area of reproductive rights and justice. On Rewire.News, Gandy also has a column called the Angry Black Lady Chronicles where she discusses reproductive rights, US politics, civil rights, and other issues. She founded the column as an independent blog in 2009 before moving the blog on to Rewire.News. [1]

Gandy previously worked for TWiB Media from 2013-2016.

She co-hosted the TWiB Prime and TWiB in the Morning radio shows on the TWiB FM website.

From 2012-2013, Gandy worked as a Freelance Writer and Legal Consultant for RH Reality Check.

As a Legal Consultant, she developed federal and state policy resources relating to anti-choice legislation.

In 2012, Gandy founded People Organizing for Women's Rights (POWR),a women's rights organization that leverages social media and other social action tools to combat gender discrimination and inequality at the state and federal level. Gandy worked as a Freelance Writer for The Grio from 2011-2013. From 2011-2012, Gandy was a Community Outreach Director for Everybody Wins! LA. She e xpanded the Power Lunch program (a read-aloud program which matches corporate volunteers with students in Title I elementary schools), into a new school. Her other responsibilities include stakeholder outreach and fundraising. From 2009-2011, Gandy was an Associate at the law firm, AlvaradoSmith. Her practice included business litigation, foreclosure litigation, Internet technology litigation, with an emphasis on insurance coverage litigation on behalf of both policyholders and insurers. Her clients included JPMorgan Chase, Washington Mutual Bank, The Travelers Companies, CNA, Sylmark Inc. and affiliated entities, Tucows. and the Coalition for Internet Transparency ("CFIT"). Additional clients included Zurich American Insurance Company, Lloyd's of London, and Reebok. Gandy successfully drafted a United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit appeal upholding lower court's dismissal of action brought against Tucows by spam litigant Daniel Balsam, resulting in a published opinion. Gandy previously worked as an Associate for Alston & Bird, Cathcart Collins LLP, Hancock Rothert & Bunshoft, and Latham & Watkins. Before graduating from law school, Gandy worked as a Summer Associate for Brown & Wood and a Legal Assistant at Covington & Burling.

Imani Gandy has presented at several conferences and panels, including the 2013 Abortion Care Network as the Keynote Speaker; the 2014 Baffler Conference; the 2016 YBCA 100 Summit; the 2016 PPFA 100th Anniversary at the Brooklyn Historical Society; the 2018 SXSW Panel “If Roe Were to Go”; the 2018 plenary for National Abortion Federation’s annual meeting; and the 2018 Affect Conference as the Keynote Speaker. Boom! Lawyered won Podcast of the Year in 2017 from the Population Control Institute. [1] [5]
