It all started during the financial collapse of 2008, where Ian Scherzer found himself laid off from Merrill Lynch . During this time, he went on to put his energy into creating a business venture that would secure is future and provide him freedom. Once this decision was made, he combined his passion for technology with his desire to help his community by being an independently owned small business.
Scherzer leveraged his network and was able to connect with an executive who provided him with an offer he could not refuse. His offer was a free office space to help Ian put his ideas into action and get the business off the ground. In return, Ian was to take care of the property. Ian seized the opportunity and that is when My Expert PC was born.
My Expert PC focused on servicing personal computers by providing repair services, software instillation, virus help, and more. Scherzer attended BNI networking events to grow exposure for My Expert PC because sales were still extremely slow.
The next phase was the hiring of My Expert PC’s first employee. This decision was a tough one because business was still slow, and the money was tight. Despite these challenges, Ian knew that he had to invest in the company if he wanted it to grow into his ultimate vision. From that moment, Ian committed to going “All in” and hired his first employee.
Over the next couple years, My Expert PC began to slowly grow and also was able to observe the trends of the industry during the process. During this growth phase, My Expert PC opened a new location, in North Brunswick . Ian ensured that he continued to focus on customer loyalty by always telling the truth, no matter what other companies would say.
As the marketplace continued to evolve, so did the consumer’s needs. More and more smartphone devices began being brought in for repairs. As the technology advanced so did the portable smartphone. But it had a major weakness, it’s extremely fragile. It wasn’t long before smartphones with broken screens began piling up in the shop.
By 2010, the demand for smartphones and tablet repairs had increased to a pivotal point. Ian took advantage of this opportunity and was able to take My Expert PC to the next level by transcending into a complete device repair center.
Two years of hard work later, in 2012, My Expert PC made the move into its present-day location inside the Bridgewater Commons Mall directly across from the Apple store. This is where the business took on its new name and brand, iCity Repair. Initially, iCity Repair began as a small mall cart that repaired devices and sold protective cases. Ian continued to focus on providing exceptional quality services while providing the highest level of customer satisfaction possible.
Over the next year, iCity Repair was able to propel to the next level. This was attributed to word of mouth combined with the new location. In mid 2013, Ian took the next leap and got approval to get a complete booth upgrade. This $50,000 upgrade transformed the small mall cart into Ian’s true vision he had on day one of this journey in 2008.
Giving back to his local community has been a part of Ian’s plan since the beginning. Ian donates both time and money to multiple local causes and organizations he believes in. Many of these organizations are experiencing budget cuts or no budget at all and he knows his donations truly help them continue to operate.
