Hasan Piker (born July 25, 1991), is an American journalist, producer, activist, and political commentator who is best known as the creator behind “The Breakdown” for The Young Turks. [1] [7] [11]
Early Life and Education
Piker was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey. [1] He is fluent in three languages including Turkish, German, and English. Piker based in Turkey over an extended period of time and moved to the United States for College. He attended the University of Miami for a year before transferring to Rutgers University. During his time at Rutgers University, he played an active part in the campus community including being a member of Theta Delta Chi and Rutgers Club Basketball. He graduated from Rutgers University in 2013 with The Bachelor of Arts in political science and communication. [4]
Career
Hasan co-hosting Pop Crunch
Piker works for The Young Turks, a progressive media organization that is targeted towards Millenials, and has a number of responsibilities. He is in charge of developing, producing, and co-hosting Pop Crunch on Pop Trigger which has daily commentary on pop culture and political events that are happening at the moment. [4] Since the premiere of his Pop-Crunch series, The Young Turks' Network grew their Youtube subscriber base by 4 percent and currently generates 50% higher views on average relative to the rest of the channel. [4] In addition, Piker produces original content for The Young Turks social media platforms and his own Facebook page. [10]
In addition, Piker laid the foundation for the entire advertisement and sales operation structure as the first sales person at The Young Turks and is still the head of optimizing TYT’s content.
Controversies
In August 2019, during a Twitch stream, Piker criticized Member of Congress Dan Crenshaw for his continued opposition in the United States House of Representatives to stop sending arms to Saudi Arabia. Piker questioned why Crenshaw would be opposed, considering he lost his eye while serving. [25]
Personal Life
Piker is the nephew of Cenk Uygur. [6] He currently resides in Los Angeles, California, but travels to Istanbul and the New York metropolitan area to visit family and friends. [5]
