Garbage Pail Kids NFTs are collectible digital trading cards established on the WAX blockchain in Partnership with Topps. The digital trading cards are modeled after the original 1985 sticker trading card Garbage Pail Kids sets. They were released in celebration of Garbage Pail Kids' 35th Anniversary.[1]
Overview
Physical and digital sports collectables giant, Topps, partnered with the WAX blockchain to bring the Garbage Pail Kids series to the Globe of cryptocurrency and NFTs. The collection is also referred to as the 35th Anniversary Blockchain Series. The digital cards look exactly like their physical Predecessors, but the new NFTs can even have small animations that give the cards more personality. [1]
Garbage Pail Kids are a parody on the wholesome Cabbage Patch Kids, featuring abnormal, bizarre, disgusting and often dark characters. Each card is titled with some kind of wordplay connected to the content on the card. So a character who eats his own boogers might be called "Gooey Louie". They were designed by a Pulitzer Prize-winning artist named Art Spiegelman. [2]
Reception
On May 12th, 2020 Topps and WAX released their first series of Garbage Pail Kids NFTs through a special shop designed specifically for the cards, https://toppsgpk.io/shop. [3] A total of 12,000 GPK card packs containing 110,000 cards sold out in 28 hours. Within a week, over $280,000 worth of GBK NFTs had been traded on the secondary market and certain cards already began selling for a high price, like the super rare animated Adam Bomb which sold for $1,160 or around 25,000 WAX. [4]
The Topps WAX account had earned over $21,000 through the secondary market in less than two weeks.
Special Editions
The first edition of GPK NFTs contained 41 character cards which are available in varying degrees of scarcity:
Base - Standard static cards featuring both the “A” and “B” names of all 41 characters from Original Series 1. Base Cards are included in every pack
Prism - Uncommon cards, these cards feature a prismatic sheen effect; “A” and “B” for all 41 characters
Sketch - Rare cards that feature an animated transition from original sketches to final art; “A” and “B” for all 41 characters
Collector's Edition - Super rare cards with special animations; 4 characters available in “A” and “B” name
Ultra-Rare Golden Cards: Everyone who bought packs early on were entered into a raffle to win these limited edition cards.
