Felipe Arriaga

Felipe Arriaga

Felipe Arriaga (September 27, 1937 - November 3, 1988); was a Mexican singer and actor. He was born with the given name José Luis Aguilar Oseguera, in Rancho El Pitayo, municipality of Cotija de la Paz, Michoacán, Mexico, in 1937.

Felipe was the eleventh child of the [3] marriage of Don Gerardo and Doña Meche Aguilar. He is survived by his wife Modesta Uribe Ramos and their children Gerardo and Tonantzin.

Biography

José Luis Aguilar, better known as Felipe Arriaga, studied until the second year of elementary school in the state elementary school Melchor Ocampo in Cotija, Michoacán. Felipe abandoned his studies due to the bad economic situation that afflicted the Aguilar family and became an apprentice shoemaker.

In 1953, the Aguilar family emigrated to Mexico City where Don Gerardo formed a mariachi group called Mariachi Aguilar and Felipe, at the young age of 16, became one of its members.

In 1967, by this time Felipe was already in charge of Mariachi Aguilar, he invites a young man from Jalisco to be part of his mariachi as the lead vocalist. This young man would become years later the greatest exponent of the ranchera song today: Vicente Fernandez.

Despite the passing of the years, Vicente did not forget the opportunity that Felipe gave him when he came to Mexico City in search of his dreams and always helped Felipe to succeed. Sadly, when [4] Felipe was at the height of his career with several full-length albums and hits such as Pelea de Perros, Fina Estampa, Corazón Corazoncito and more than 20 films in several starring roles, Felipe Arriaga was mysteriously murdered in Mexico City, in 1988, outside his home.

His most outstanding performances are in the feature films Un Cura de Locura and Entre Monjas Anda el Diablo. As a singer his most outstanding hits are Pelea de Perros, Bajo el Cielo de Morelia, Corazón Apasionado, Juan Colorado, Corazón Corazoncito, Me Caí de la Nube and El adiós del Soldado (a duet with his great friend Vicente Fernández).
