Eric Hummel
Negligent Discharge Incident
9mm Parabellum
On June 10, 2017, Hummel was showing his two sons, ages 9 and 10 respectively, how to properly handle a firearm.
He was explaining to them never to play with firearms because they have the capacity to kill someone.
Beliving that it was empty, Hummel pointed the 9mm pistol at his daughter who walked in the room and pulled the trigger.
The round entered the left upper forehead from a range of 2 to 3 feet.
In an act of desperation, Hummel attempted chest compression while paramedics were en route.
Olivia Hummel was pronounced dead at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart, thirty minutes later.
Arrest and Charges
After the shooting, Hummel was arrested by authorities and was charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death, battery resulting in death to a person less than 14 years of age, reckless homicide, and two counts of neglect of a dependent.
Hummel is currently out of Lake County Jail on bail. His first court hearing has been set for July 5, 2017. [1]
