Emily Badger

Emily Badger is a writer with bylines in dozens of major publications. She writes about urban planning, housing, transportation, poverty and inequality and the thread that runs between them.

Education

Emily graduated with a degree in Journalism from Northwestern University. While she was in college she spent a semester interning at The Oregonian in Portland. She also studied French at the Université Sorbonne and got a master’s in creative nonfiction writing from Johns Hopkins University.

Career

Emily Badger's first job was as an agate clerk in the sports department of the Chicago Tribune during her last year of high school. She began her journalism career in the exciting world of sports. Interning for The Washington Post sports section and writing for The Orlando Sentinel. After 5 years of covering sweaty athletes Emily decided to switch up her career path. She moved to Paris, studied French and started freelancing for a long list of sites. She eventually planted herself at The Atlantic Cities blog in 2013. Emily was a reporter for Washington Post's Wonkblog where she covered urban policy, she left in 2016. She has also been a staff writer at CityLab, and UpshotNYT.

Emily is an extremely prolific journalist.

Personal Life

Emily grew up in Chicago but she has also lived in Portland, Cleveland, Orlando, Tallahassee, Paris, Norfolk and Atlanta. She's passionate about hiking and still wants to visit Mount Rainier, Denali, Acadia, Zion and more national parks. She has two cats named after Louis Jordan’s "Beans and Cornbread".
