Elma Smit
Elma Smit is a South African radio DJ and television presenter who rose to fame after winning SuperSport's 2011 Lady Rugga presenter search, which saw her hosting segments for the broadcaster during the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.
Education
Elma received a Law degree from the Stellenbosch University.Later, she enrolled for a post-graduate degree in Journalism at the University of the Witwatersrand.[25]
Career
TV/Radio Presenter
Starting out as a DJ on small radio stations like Radio KC in Paarl (2004) and MFM 92.6 in Stellenbosch (2005-2007), she became a music compiler for 5 FM in 2008. Her first television presenting job was for the DStv Afrikaans music channel MK (2010), which saw her hosting the 2011 MK Awards. After winning the Lady Rugga competition and presenting inserts for the 2011 Rugby World Cup she became a contributor to the rugby show Boots & All on SuperSport. In 2012 she became one of the six presenters of the kykNET, the Breakfast Show Dagbreek, which began airing on 5 November, 2012.
In 2012, while working on 5FM she created her own Sunday night show "The El-ternative", which was followed by a stint as producer and contributor on the weekend breakfast show in 2013 and eventually the executive producer of the station’s brand new drive-time offering "The Roger Goode Show" in 2014.[25]
Currently, Elma works as an anchor for SuperSport and sport anchor on "Breakfast With Martin Bester" on JacarandaFM.[25]
MC
Besides making content for radio, TV and web, Elma also enjoys working as an MC on a regular basis.
It all started with Oppikoppi in 2008 (SA’s equivalent of Glastonbury or Coachella) and that lead to the Red Bull Soundclash, the 2010 and 2012 South African Music Awards, the Campus Invasion Tour 2011, Kaktus Oppi Vlaktes at KKNK 2012, Pendoring Reklametoekennings (2010, 2013), the SA Rugby Player of the Year Awards (2013, 2014), Ghoema Musiektoekennings 2013, the Players’ Fund Benefit Dinner 2014, ATKV Veertjies 2014, BEELD Economist of the Year 2014 and others.[25]
In addition to an array of corporate MC gigs, Elma has also proven her mettle as anchor or co-anchor of live award shows for broadcast, such as five SARU Player of the Year Gala dinners, the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Fund Gala Dinner, the Pendoring Toekennings, the Ghoema’s, the SAMA’s and 6 editions of the annual MK Awards.[26]
