Dennis Bray is active professor emeritus at the Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge.

He was trained as a biochemist at MIT and neurobiologist at Harvard Medical School before returning to the UK where he had a long research career in the fields of nerve growth and cell motility.

In 1991 throughout a sabbatical visit to Caltech he made a paradigmatic change to computational biology, with primary focus on the molecular machinery of bacterial chemotaxis.

Through his successful modelling of this signalling pathway he became an influential advocate of the computational approach to living cells.

Bray is an author of numerous bestselling and influential textbooks on molecular and cell biology such as "Molecular Biology of the Cell," and "Cell Movements," and most recently wrote a popular book "Wetware" describing the computational basis of living cells and its relation to the hardware and software of electronic systems.
