Penelton competed against Jean Pasal at the Bell Centre on June 18, 2005 in Montreal, Canada and lost.[4] Penelton also lost to Damon Reed in 2002.
In 1998, Reed challenged for the WBO heavyweight title against Herbie Hide and lost.

Penelton was the assistant trainer of Gerald McClellan when McClellan defended his World Boxing Council middleweight world title in 1993 and 1994. [8] As of 2022, Penelton works as a boxing trainer out of St. Cloud, Minnesota. He trained Gerald McClellan Jr. during his amateur career. He was featured in the 2011 documentary, The Fight Of Their Lives. It is on the Internet Movie Database. Nigel Benn vs. Gerald McClellan occurred in 1995 and is one of the most controversial matches in boxing history.[9]
