Early Life and Education
Poon is the daughter of Harvey Nichols retail tycoon Dickson Poon and the chairman of the textile and apparel-manufacturing company of the Esquel Group Majorie Yang.
Poon grew up in her parents' factories and stores learning about how business works.
Poon went on to attend Harvard University and graduated in 2004 with a B.A. in Philosophy. [1]
Career
Before going into business, Poon was a writer and film director.
She was a featured columnist at Modern Weekly as well as editor-at-large for iLook magazine.
[1] Her short film "An Exercise in Futility" was shown at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009 as part of the One Dream Rush film series.
[1] Poon founded dysemevas, a pop-up concept telling the stories of today's China through the work of Chinese designers.
Around 2009, Poon joined her mother at the Esquel Group as the chief brand officer of PYE, a brand dedicated to premium men's dress shirts.
When she first joined, PYE was struggling to make a profit, but after being mentored by her mother and making smart business decisions, Poon led PYE to become a successful enterprise.
Advisory and Fellow Positions
Poon is a fellow of the Aspen Institute's China Fellowship Program and serves on the boards of the China Arts Foundation, Teach for China and the Esquel - Y.L.
Yang Education Foundation.
[1] She also sits on the international council for London’s Tate and New York’s MoMA, the advisory committee of Harvard University Asia Center, and the Global Steering Committee of Social Entrepreneurship for Sexual Health.
