David Smalling is a Director at BlackRock. ^[1] He is based in San Francisco. Smalling was selected to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2017 for the Finance category.

Smalling is from Jamaica and graduated from Mona Preparatory School. He attended Campion College before transferring to Yale University where he would earn a B.S./M.S. in Mathematics. Smalling would attain a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University in 2015.

Early in his career, Smalling was a Summer Analyst at AQR Capital Management and an Investment Professional at Ellington Management Group. In 2016, he joined BlackRock and was later promoted to Director. At BlackRock, Smalling uses quantitative models to trade across asset classes for a $6 billion hedge fund.
