David P. Mikkelson

David P. Mikkelson

David Mikkelson is the co-founder and CEO of Snopes.com. He has been involved in the Internet realm for decades as a proponent of Urban Legends.

Background

David is a pioneer in the American Socio-political sphere of online news and content. Before search engines he was an early figure who wrote about themes concerning hoaxes, scams, missing kids, and fake news - all taking place in message boards and emails. Through emails, members or individuals would send him suggestions about the aforementioned topics he was writing about. By the time the 2000 Presidential election came about, he began to debunk political pieces that would spread around the internet communities. Since then he has been involved in many scandals concerning the use of facts on the internet, and also for his business practices.

He started the site along with his ex-wife, Barbara Mikkelson, back in 1995.

They met in the early 90s on a Folklore-themed online message board posting as "The San Fernando Valley Folklore Society". They later got married and began working on setting up the site.

Education

Mikkelson graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio in Computer science.

After their divorce in 2015, a year later, Mikkelson's wife claimed in legal documents that he had embezzled more than $98k of company money over the course of four years using the money to go on trips with his girlfriend turned new wife.

David wanted his salary raised from $240,000 to $360,000 – arguing that this would still put him below the 'industry standards' and that he should be paid up to $720,000 a year.

The divorce settlement stipulated that David Mikkelson receive a salary of $240,000 a year in 2015, while both of the former couple were due to receive $20,000 a month as a draw against profits, as well as a share of any net profit the company made after those payments.

David has been the topic of controversy after it was revealed that he spent company money to go on trips with his wife, Elysse Young, who was a well-known Pornographic actress in the 90s, and up until 2015, was still active as an escort.

According to his ex-wife Barbara, David has also taken the steps to hire people she refers to as "prostitutes".

Due to the emergence of Fake news sites around the internet, Facebook has decided to make Snopes.com an arbiter in the veracity of news.
