Biography
Matthews was born and raised in the area of South Yorkshire in the United Kingdom.
He grew up in the city of Rotherham and lived there for a better part of his young adult life as well.
Education
He attended and graduated from Sheffield University Technical College.
Professional Career
Mechanic
After college, he worked as an apprentice mechanic at his father's business, Wallace's garage.
Salesman
During this time in his life, he was also a cars door-to-door salesman at the age of 19 while also working as a mechanic and also raced.
Car Racing

While working as a salesman he was also a devout race car driver.
A skilled driver, he became division champion in the British Touring Car Championships in 1971.
After having many races under his belt, he ended his career early after nearly losing his life in a car crash that left another driver dead.
His car flipped at 130mph, killing one driver, critically injuring another and temporarily stopping Matthews' heart.

After retiring from car racing, to Matthews turned transforming a used-car enterprise into a large dealership, Kirkby Central Group.
Two years later, just before Spencer's birth, Kirkby Central was the subject of a £8.5 million takeover by Plaxton's, a firm which made buses and coaches.
Personal Life
Matthews first married Anita Taylor, a fellow driver, some time in the 1960s as a young man.
The two would later divorce in 1969.
He married Rhodesian-born artist Jane Parker.
After moving out of Rotherham, they lived on a 30-acre, 18th-century estate in rural Lincolnshire, before moving to Paris, then Monaco.
He currently lives in Saint Barthélemy with his wife.
Sons
David and Jane Parker had three sons: James, Spencer, and Michael, who tragically died when he was just 22 on an expedition up Mount Everest.
His son, James Matthews, is a notable figure in the media due to his high-profile marriage with Pippa Middleton.
His other son, Spencer Matthews is a socialite who's been a part of the show, Made in Chelsea.
Retirement And Property
After several successful years in business, Matthews retired after the recession and ventured into hotels, snapping up the Eden Rock in St Barts in 1995, which he moved into and revamped.
Rape Allegations
On Friday, March 30th, 2018, he was charged with raping a minor in the country of France.
He was taken into custody for questioning by investigators with France's Brigade for the Protection of Minors in a case dating from 1998-99, after a complaint was lodged in 2017.
He was accused by a niece shortly before she legally became an adult.
