Cyclone Vardah [1] is a severe cyclonic storm that hit parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh in India on December 12, 2016. Chennai was the worst hit city. The cyclone reportedly lasted almost 90 minutes and was traveling at 140 kmph. Cyclone Vardah claimed 7 lives including a 3 year old child and 4 women.
The cyclone also caused severe damage to the residential areas in Kottivakkam, Palavakkam, Foreshore Estate and Royapuram.
Electrical poles around Chennai were damaged and the city faced power cuts throughout the day.
About 8,000 people from low-lying areas in north Chennai, Pazhaverkadu in Tiruvallur district and villages off Mamallapuram, in Kanchipuram district were safely evacuated to 95 relief shelters.
In Andhra Pradesh, over 9,400 people living along the Bay of Bengal were evacuated to relief camps.
Cyclone Vardah is the most intense cyclone to hit Chennai in over 2 decades.
