Timmons was very excited when she heard that the auditions were being held in Savannah, but was unaware judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie would be there and she was excited that they are going to hear her sing when she found out. She was however told that people at the audition had already sung in front of producers two months prior. Timmons was also told by some that she “might as well go home” and her chances of being seen were slim to none. Despite all these discouragements, she was determined and stayed out there for seven hours.[10]
Ryan Seacrest gives her a chance
Ryan Seacrest]]]]]met her while she was outside and he decided to give her a chance after she explained how she'd wanted to participate in the audition for her entire life. Seacrest decided to bring Timmons straight to the judges for her once in a lifetime shot. He made no promises. He explained to the judges her situation and Simmon also introduced herself to the judges.[12]
Timmons' performace brings Seacrest and Perry to tears
She sang Andra Day's hit, "Rise Up." Timmons' powerful, controlled vocals stunned the judges so much Bryan thought they were being punked. A teary-eye Seacrest joined Timmons on the floor. Perry recalled seeing Timmons outside and thinking that she was just a fan. Meanwhile, Richie told Timmons, "You can sang! There's a difference between singing and sanging. You are a bird girl."[12]
The judges make a decision
The judges continued to shower praise on the aspiring singer, saying she was the best they'd heard for the day.
Perry, who teared up, added that it was "a magical moment."
Finally, the judges performed the tradition of announcing loudly that the contestant would be going to Hollywood for the next round.[12]
