Connie Chiume

Connie Chiume is a South African film, television and stage actress. She began acting in 1977 in theatre productions such as Ipi Ntombi, Porgy and Bess, and Little Shop of Horrors (musical) and went on to toured Israel and Greece.

Connie Chiume is best known for her roles on Soul City (South African TV series) and of Mamokete Khuse on the e.tv soap opera Rhythm City (TV series) from 2007 to 2016. She was part of the original cast of Rhythm City (TV series) when it debuted on 9 July 2007. She was previously best known for her role as Stella Moloi in the SABC 1 drama series Zone 14 (South African Television series), from 2005-2010, for which she won the South African Film and Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama at the third South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs), in 2009.

Connie Chiume had a supporting role in the groundbreaking American Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero film Black Panther (2019) starring Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, as well as John Kani and Atandwa Kani.

Early Life

Connie Chiume was born in Welkom in the Free State (province) of South Africa to Wright Tadeyo Chiume a Malawian immigrant from Usisya, Nkhata Bay and a Zulu mother from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Her father returned to Malawi in the 70s and later died in that country in 1983. Having been born in South Africa, Connie laments having been deprived of a chance to enjoy her Malawian culture. She has stated that,however she is proud of her mixed-blood identity. She is a cousin of Malawian politician Ephraim Chiume

She enrolled but did not complete her nursing course, instead went forward to train as a teacher graduating in 1976.

She taught for a while after what she resigned and traveled to Israel, then Greece for performances as a cast. It was during this travels that Connie discovered her passion for art and drama.

Career

Other television series she has starred in include the SABC 1 drama Soul City (South African TV series) (for which the won the Avanti award for Best Actress in a Drama Series in 2000), the SABC 1 sitcom Mazinyo Dot Q and the SABC 2 drama series 90 Plein Street.

She has also appeared in Home Affairs (TV series), Khululeka (Seasons 1-3), Yizo Yizo 3, Soul City (South African TV series) and Generations (South African TV series), among others. She has also acted in numerous commercials, documentaries and educationals.

Connie has acted in numerous feature films as well, including The Air Up There (1994), Chikin Biznis (1998), I Dreamed of Africa (2000) and Country of My Skull (2004).

In April 2016 she announced she was retiring the role of Mamokete in the e.tv soapie Rhythm City (TV series), which she had played since the show's first episode on 9 July, 2007. She said she would still focus on acting, but also wanted to indulge her longtime passion for farming. Her last appearance on the show was on Wednesday 20 April, 2016

Personal

Connie Chiume has four children, two of which are adopted.

She got married in 1985 and divorced in 2004.

On March 2020, she announced on Instagram that her mother had passed away, 2 days shy of her 98th birthday. She posted a picture of her mother with the message: "Rest in peace mom 19 March 1922 - 17 March 2020".[1]
