Racist Incident
On August 12th, 2017, while inside of La Quinta, a hotel located in Coral Springs, a woman by the name of Summer Cortts began harassing Colleen using racism and bigotry to provoke Colleen into a profane verbal altercation in the hotel lobby.
A video posted on Facebook by a man named Austin, captured the incident. The video begins proceeding the moments when Colleen is seen taking off her shoes in case the woman decides to get in her face. A few seconds after, Cortts gets closer to Colleen and puts her hands on her. Colleen then fights back knocks her to the ground where she continues to land punches. The fight was broken up by the hotel security guard. Colleen calmly collected herself while Cortts insisted that she would press charges. Cortts admits that she's three months pregnant. Cortts then says that everything was caught on video - Cortts attacked her.
After the incident the video began to spread on Twitter so Colleen decided to sign up for an account. She responded with the following post:
"This is a young country, built on racism.
Black people have been disenfranchised for over 250 years.
The faster white people accept and validate the truth, the closer we'll come to a place of peace and understanding.
Fighting racism is dependent upon using my white privilege for the right reasons.
There were 2 examples of white privilege in the video.
The woman in the blue dress tried to use her white privilege on me, the fact that I'm white too must have slipped her mind.
If you see it, say something.
It's really that simple.
Disclaimer; some people can't handle the truth.
Stay ready"
The African American community has heralded the actions that she took to fight racism and for standing up to black people in the United States.
