CoinMarketCap is a website that tracks the prices and market capitalizations of various cryptocurrencies. It was founded by Brandon Chez in 2013 and is based in New York City .[3]

CoinMarketCap launched operations in 2013 following seven cryptocurrencies and handful of exchanges and markets with a total market capitalization of $1.6 billion USD at the time.[3] As of October 3rd, 2018, that number had grown to tracking over 2,000 cryptocurrencies with a total market capitalization of over $200 billion USD.[1]

CoinMarketCap statistics are updated every five minutes. The market capitalization of a given cryptocurrency is calculated by multiplying price by total supply. Prices are determined by averaging prices on major exchanges weighted by volume. Coins with stale data points (more than 6 hours old) are shown at the bottom of the list with question marks and are delisted after 7 days.[9]

With a substantial following, CoinMarketCap has over 470K followers on Twitter .[6] In addition, CoinMarketCap is in the top 350 websites visited worldwide according to Alexa.[2]

In May 2018, CoinMarketCap launched their mobile application.[5] Along with providing cryptocurrency market informationation, CoinMarketCap started maintaining a blog in July 2018 that provides analysis, trends, interviews and more on cryptocurrencies and blockchain as well as company updates.[8]

On October 3, 2018, Coinmarketcap updated the circulating supply and market capitalization of Everipedia 's IQ token .[4]
