VanLandingham graduated from Indiana University in 2013. She went on to study dentistry at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry, graduating in May 2017. ^{[10] [0]}

From January 2014 until May 2017, VanLandingham was a student at the Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in Bethesda, Maryland. ^{[10] [4]}

On August 12, 2017, she was assigned to the USS Osborne Dental Clinic at Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center. ^{[10] [4]}

She served as a lieutenant in the Navy Dental Corps. ^{[10] [4]}VanLandingham received her Navy commission in December 2013. ^{[10] [4]}

On Wednesday, January 3, 2018, authorities responded to a report of gunfire at about 6:20 a.m. and found Ryan Zike dead of a gunshot wound to the head behind a Dunkin' Donuts at 620 N. Western in Lake Forest, Illinois. ^{[3] [4]}

Vanlandingham was also found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Lake Forest Hospital, where she died. ^{[4] [3]}
